I consider myself a very healthy person. I mean, I am a Holistic Health Practitioner and Certified Holistic Nutritionist, I should be healthy right?
Well, just because I am a holistic doctor, doesn’t mean that I don’t have my share of health battles. Confession time: For the last five years, I have struggled immensely with lower back pain. Sometimes this pain was manageable but sometimes, at least once a year, it was excruciating and caused me to be in bed for a few days, unable to walk or function. I just lived with it. As in the past, with my weight, I had become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
In the last two years, I have gone on a complete quest for total freedom and health. I underwent a series of events that led me to where I am now and I have lost a whopping 80 pounds! I have never felt better in my life. The only thing that was still holding me back was this unbearable back pain.
My story to healthy living is long, but the journey had been fulfilling. I opened a holistic health practice just north of Atlanta in December and was overjoyed when I met my neighbor in the building next door. She is Dr. Kim Minick and a renowned Chiropractor. As we talked, I instantaneously knew that I liked her so much. She was sweet and bubbly, and by far one of the most intelligent people I had ever met. It was refreshing and I was grateful for connecting.
I invited her over for tea and to record an episode for my podcast. As we sipped our tea, we talked about what it was like to visit a chiropractor. What did they do? What could someone expect? What type of issues would bring someone in to see her? As we are talking, I was in so much pain that I could barely sit still. She dispelled some common myths about our backs and how they connect to the rest of our bodies, and reassured me that she could help.
She left and I went home. But, I had to lay down because I was in so much pain that I could barely stand it. Finally, I texted her the next morning and asked her to squeeze me into her busy schedule. Much to my delight, she happily obliged.
At first, I was nervous walking into her wellness clinic. But, I knew Dr. Kim and her assistant quite well by then, so my nervousness quickly dissipated. She called me back and asked about my issues. Of course I went into a long, drawn out version of the last 5 years of lower back pain.
She asked me to lay down on her table and then told me that she was going to ask my body a series of questions and go from there. She swiped her hands on my hips and legs, she rearranged my feet a few times and swiped some more. She then told me that my body would recover from this and I sighed in relief.
She then went to the painful part of my lower back. She could feel heat radiating off of it and noticed that it was rotated. She carefully and deligently worked on it and without pain, I must say, she helped to rotate it. She then worked her way up my back, asking me to breathe in deep and blow it out. As I blew out my breath, she applied some mild pressure and “crack” went my back.
To finish our session, she finished on my neck. She lifted my head and slowly moved it to one side, then with a quick turn, she snapped it all in place. She repeated it again while I faced the other way. Sweet relief!
After a few minutes of resting as a newly adjusted woman, she helped me up and told me everything would be alright. And, was she right! For the first time in years I was sitting up tall and without pain. I felt like I had grown 3 inches, to boot.
After feeling so much better and when the pain didn’t return, I couldn’t help but ask myself why I didn’t see Dr. Kim sooner. Why did I live with my pain for so long?
I urge you all to take some time for yourself and schedule TLC for your spine. Find a wonderful chiropractor in your area and get yourself adjusted. It just might be that you will thank me!
